FAQs

How do I prepare for class?

Arrive at least 10-15 minutes early for your first class.

Park: In front or in parking lots behind 1040 Vail Street in Salem, IL.

Wear fitted clothes that are comfortable; yoga pants, running shorts, tank tops, sports bra, etc.

Prepare your body to sweat by hydrating and coming to class on an empty stomach. Best to have not eaten 2-3 hours before class time.

Yoga is practiced barefoot. Please make sure your feet are clean!

Children 13 years and older can participate in adult classes with parental consent.

Yoga Etiquette - What to expect in class?

New to yoga? Here are some general rules to make your practice enjoyable for you and your fellow students.

  1. Arrive on time, give yourself time to stow your items, set out your mat, and gather props. Sit and focus on your breathe as you wait for class to begin

  2. Remove shoes before entering the practice area to help keep it clean.

  3. Mind your mood. Gossip, complaining, and negative attitudes are better suited for the local watering hole or the communal kitchen at work. Be gentle and respectful in your communication. Like the saying says, everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind and respect others.

  4. Our teachers will ask and offer gentle assists in class, like guiding you deeper into a pose or shift your position to correct misalignment. Let your teacher know if you prefer to not be touched.

  5. Mind your personal hygiene. First, please bathe, brush your teeth, wash your hair, and use a clean mat and a clean towel. Second, mind heavy perfumes, oils, and colognes, as strong scents travel easily during class.

  6. Devices are a no-no. Leave all devices outside the classroom. Rings & whistles are distracting. Just putting on silent is not enough. Yoga offers you a rare chance to be fully present. A phone distracts you and those around you.

  7. Be aware of your space. it’s common courtesy to stagger your mats so that the person behind you has a clear view of the instructor and the mirror. Give you neighbor some breathing room. Mind your steps, it’s polite to avoid walking on another’s mat.

  8. Minimize conversation. Yoga is a space for reflection, self-study, and focus. Maintaining a quiet atmosphere supports this frame of mind. It is beneficial to your state of mind.

  9. Benefits of savasana (the ending of the class) Designed to restore your nervous system to its default settings and offer your mind a chance to sink into mediation. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and feel the weight of your body against the floor. It’s your own little R&R opportunity. Take it. It’s considered disrespectful to the teacher and other students and is against studio policy to leave class early. We do understand that life happens. If you absolutely must leave early, position yourself by the door, leave before savasana starts and inform your teacher before class begins. Pack up and scoot out as quietly as you can.

  10. Yoga uses props. If you borrow the studio’s, please clean and return them to their place.

Meet the Team

Sidney Garden RYT200 Yoga Teacher

Sidney stepped on a yoga mat for the first time in 2016. She was looking for a new workout routine, and was pleasantly surprised at what yoga gave her not only physically, but mentally as well. She continued an at home practice off and on until 2018. In April 2018 she attended class at Four Yoga and Wellness and completely fell in love with the community and guidance a studio class brings. After going just a few more classes, she knew she had to attend teacher training. Sidney obtained her RYT 200 through Yoga Core and More at Four Yoga in December 2018. She loves teaching a powerful vinyasa class that allows every yogi, no matter experience, to challenge themselves physically and mentally. Off the mat Sidney enjoys adventuring with her husband and 3 kids, being outdoors, and being surrounded by great friends.

Melanie Johnson RYT200 Yoga Instructor

Melanie teaches with a goal to increasing your flexibility and personal journey in life.  Her classes are taught with props, such as chair, blocks, and bolsters to enhance your range of stretching, and designed to teach functional poses that will enhance your life. Melanie’s class starts at ground zero! No need to touch your toes!

“Zo” Alonzo Whitman RYT200 Yoga Instructor

Alonzo is a 200 HR RYT Certified Yoga Instructor, Yin Yoga Certified Instructor, Meditation and Breathwork Certified Instructor who has been regularly practicing Yoga for nearly a decade. He details his first experience with Yoga was doing the challenging  P90X Yoga workout back in the late 2000’s. The routine awakened aspects of movement and engaged muscles Alonzo had not explored within any of the sports or training he participated in at that point in his life and since. It wasn’t until a few years later after participating in his first studio class in Fort Collins, CO while in college that he began to see the true benefit of practice for a variety of people. Since then, through travels around the country and trying studios here and there, he took the practice seriously and began to practice independently and consistently once back in Chicago in 2016 and Yoga has been a constant in daily life since then.

Stylistically, Alonzo’s practice is an exploration of strength, stability and patience with use of strong longer holds and mindful movement from pose to pose. He relishes in guiding others through their personal exploration with challenges and emphasis on functional movement. Alonzo continues to include variety within his practices offering fresh energy as he continues to develop and learn though others.
